Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Program

The Certified Flight Instructor Program at Volair is designed to develop confident, knowledgeable, and professional educators—not just pilots who can pass a checkride. Built to meet both Part 61 and Part 141 requirements, the program goes beyond minimum standards by emphasizing instructional technique, risk management, and real-world teaching skills. Students learn not only what to teach, but how to teach it clearly, effectively, and safely.

A structured syllabus blends in-depth ground training with scenario-based flight instruction, progressively transitioning each candidate into the instructor role. From presenting complex aeronautical concepts to coaching maneuvers from the right seat, every lesson is designed to build instructional confidence and professionalism. The goal is simple: to produce flight instructors prepared to educate, mentor, and lead the next generation of pilots.

CFI Training Stages

Stage 1: Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI)

Stage 1 lays the foundation for effective aviation instruction. Candidates focus on how people learn, how training is structured, and how students are evaluated. Emphasis is placed on professionalism, communication, and risk management in the instructional environment. This stage prepares candidates for the FOI knowledge test and establishes the mindset required to transition from pilot to educator.

Stage 2: Ground & Flight Instructing

Stage 2 is the core of the CFI program and shifts the majority of teaching responsibility to the instructor candidate. Ground lessons and preflight briefings are taught by the candidate, with training focused on refining lesson delivery, correcting errors, and adapting instruction to student needs. In flight, candidates teach and demonstrate maneuvers from the right seat while receiving feedback on instructional technique, safety awareness, and effectiveness. This stage also includes spin training and culminates in the CFI aeronautical knowledge test and a comprehensive stage check.

Stage 3: Practical Test Preparation

Stage 3 is dedicated to polishing instructional performance and preparing for the FAA practical test. Candidates complete mock oral exams and focused flight reviews that mirror real checkride expectations. Emphasis is placed on consistency, clarity, and confidence—ensuring candidates can clearly explain concepts, manage risk, and instruct to ACS standards. The final stage check confirms readiness to earn the Certified Flight Instructor Certificate.
